Presentation Title: Discursive Practices that Hinder Student Participation in the Language Classroom

Abstract

Using conversation analysis, the presenter examines one teacher’s discursive practices that hinder student participation during whole-group activities. It was found that when the teacher (1) disattends to learners’ voices or (2) assumes the role of information provider away from students, opportunities for learners to initiate or further their talk is limited.
