Conference: THE 2011 NATIONAL CHINESE LANGUAGE CONFERENCE (San Francisco, April 14-16, 2011)

Invited Panel: SLA: Raising Teacher Sensitivity

Organizer: ZhaoHong Han

Other panelists: Cheng-ling Alice Chen, Lu Xuan Lu

Abstract

In this session, we will introduce a number of categorical findings from second language acquisition research, and relate them to the teaching of Chinese as a second and foreign language. We will discuss the implications of these findings for the types of conditions that need to and can be provided in the classroom in order to facilitate learning. We will subsequently zero in on one of the conditions, corrective feedback, to show how mishandling it may misguide learning.  In so doing, we seek to raise teacher sensitivity to learners’ cognitive needs.
